Girls volleyball coach Steve Shondell reached an incredible milestone on Thursday, September 26th, when his Owls team defeated the Daleville Broncos in Shondell’s 1200th win as head coach. Shondell is one of only four Indiana high school coaches to have 1000 or more career wins, and one of two who is still active (Delta tennis coach Tim Cleland, 1039-174). According to the Star Press, “Shondell is eighth in the nation among active coaches in wins for girls volleyball and 15th on the all-time list. No one’s win-percentage comes close to Shondell’s on either list” (General, para. 11).
Shondell returned to Burris after a ten-year leave, and has since returned the school to state and national attention. Burris is currently ranked 33rd in the state for girls’ volleyball, and 943rd in the country (maxpreps.com). But for Shondell, win number 1200 was just business as usual. “After the match, [Shondell] conducted his normal routine by going to talk to parents and fans of the program. People quickly filed out since not many knew of the historical achievement that Shondell, now in his 35th year at Burris, had just achieved” (General, para. 4).
